Four Ways You Can Support Victims of Hurricane Harvey Right Now

After days of torrential downpour, Hurricane Harvey has flooded Houston and much of the surrounding areas in Texas. Today, the levee in Columbia Lakes has been breached and Harvey is expected to continue into Wednesday. With so many Texans displaced and rescuers and the National Guard stretched thin, here are four ways you can support victims of Hurrican Harvey and create hope right now.

1. Donate Money: The American Red Cross is accepting donations online. You can also text HARVEY to 90999 to donate $10 and support the victims of Hurricane Harvey. As of Monday, the Red Cross has 1,600 workers assigned to Harvey’s relief operation in Texas and more are expected to arrive in the days ahead. The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund is a local organization created by Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner where you can also donate money to support victims. For other charities to donate money to Hurricane Harvey relief programs, you can find more here. You can also search Charity Navigator  to donate to programs that provide support victims of Hurricane Harvey.

2. Donate Blood: Blood center shortages are expected and donations of all blood types are needed for the injuries to likely be sustained during Hurricane Harvey. Should you wish to donate blood to support the victims of Hurricane Harvey, contact your local Red Cross or click here to find the nearest donation center in your local area to donate blood.

3. Foster a Home/Support the Displaced Pets of Harvey: If you can provide aid in the form of a foster home, monetary value or supplies, these programs are looking for help. The SPCA of Texas is looking for donations and foster homes for 123 cats that were rescued and other pets as well. Austin Pets Alive is also looking for foster homes for cats and dogs in addition to cash and other donations such as cat litter, tarps, dog bowls and more to support the intake of animals.  The Houston SPCA has also set up an emergency hotline, (713) 861-3010, and is also accepting donations.

4. Donate Food, Clothing & Toys: Everything from clothing and food to medical supplies is needed in Houston right now. For Texans, you can donate food or other supplies to Feeding Texas at these food banks. Austin, Texas locals can also donate items from socks to baby formula to support Hurricane Harvey victims through the Austin Relief Network. Nationally, Feeding America is also accepting donations to provide relief to the local food banks that need help near Houston.

COMMENTS

  1. The Red Cross has proven time and time again to be untrustworthy. Unless you specifically designate the money to a specific cause, they will use it for other things like the excessively large executive salaries. If giving blood, check to see if your community has a locally managed blood bank. Red Cross is untrustworthy
